Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands. It measures 96 kilometres in width (maximum) and 78 kilometres in length. Mallorca has a total surface of 3,640 square kilometres, 554 of which are directly adjacent to the coast. The location of the island on the westernmost part of the Mediterranean has been decisive for its historic, economic and cultural development. The splendour of its mountains, its natural landscapes and prehistoric findings, as well as the tranquility that Chopin and other famous figures enjoyed and its mild climate, have made possible the development of the tourist industry.
The fastest and most comfortable way to get to the island is by air since dozens of airplanes arrive to Son Sant Joan Airport, the third most important airport in Spain, from other Spanish airports and countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom.
On the other hand, sea transport is a good option if you decide to come to Mallorca with your own vehicle. The port of Palma has connections to the ports of Barcelona, Valencia, Dénia and Ibiza, with daily two-way services. The average duration of a trip from Mallorca to the mainland is five hours. The port of Palma is also used as a stopover for cruisers and a number of shipping companies have chosen Palma as their centre of operations. The port of Alcúdia connects with the island of Menorca. The trip lasts approximately an hour and a half. Around 800,000 passengers per year arrive to Mallorca through the ports of Palma and Alcúdia.
