A privileged location for nautical tourism

The Mediterranean Sea surrounding Mallorca offers easy and safe sailing throughout the year due to the excellent weather conditions, especially from May to October. In winter good weather is predominant except during the changes of season when the wind blows from the west clocking north and cause considerably heavy storms.
The air and water temperatures remain warm throughout the year and range from an average minimum of 11 degrees in January to an average maximum of 27-28 degrees in August. Another element that attracts visitors is the light, a wonderful luminosity that attracted the universal painter Joan Miró and continues to attract the greatest painters and artists of international standing.

As well as enjoying good weather throughout the year, Mallorca offers sailors spectacular vertical cliffs of a striking beauty, desert islets and rugged, isolated coves. They can only be reached by boat, from where you can closely admire their impressive beauty. Both to admire the north coast of Mallorca and the Tramuntana mountains, with the impressive cliffs of cap Fabiler or to reach and walk around sa Dragonera island are unique experiences. As unique as the imposing views from the sea of Morrillo de Bordils, with the peak of Puig Roig in the background, or the views of Morro de la Vaca, an impressive rock that stands out for its beauty and spectacular shape, in the area of sa Calobra and the mouth of Torrent de Pareis. They are both located in the north of the island, between Andratx and Pollença.

Mallorca has a large variety of charter companies for nautical tourism. The island’s charter boat fleet is one of the largest in the Western Mediterranean with over 500 boats based in the Balearic Islands devoted to tourism and leisure. Nowadays, chartering a boat for nautical tourism is increasingly more affordable and less elitist. It is more economic for sailing enthusiasts to charter a boat than to own one personally. Mallorca offers many opportunities to enjoy the sea without having to buy or maintain a boat and also paying for a mooring.
In addition, the island offers a complete infrastructure and a complementary offer for the nautical sector, from charter companies to professionals specializing in refit and repair, boat service and sale offices, shops selling all kinds of equipment, safety systems, nautical fashion and specialized publications.

Mallorca has 42 marinas along its coast, some of which are internationally famous like Puerto Portals with its impressive yachts, exclusive shops selling international luxury brands, haut cuisine restaurants and live music night clubs that attract the most famous figures that come to the island. It is also the favourite place of the Spanish royal family. The emblematic ports of Andratx, Pollença and Alcúdia, to mention just a few of the most renowned and visited harbours on the island are less exclusive but still internationally famous. They have a first-quality complementary offer.

Mallorca has a long, renowned tradition in the practice and competition of sailing. Important competitions have been organized on the island for years. They have a significant impact both in Spain and abroad. The most popular sailing events are the Princesa Sofía Trophy and the King’s Cup. The former is one of the competitions with the greatest international prestige and a sports event of great impact and coverage in the media. More than 300 accredited journalists relay the event around the world. Over 3,000 sea and sailing enthusiasts and almost 1,000 boats take part in the trophy. The Spanish royal family participates each year in the King’s Cup. It has been held each summer for 20 years. The island, due to its long tradition in nautical sports, has a great prestige as an international tourist centre.

Visitors can enjoy over 150 sandy beaches, a few less stone, pebble or gravel beaches and 152 anchoring areas for nautical tourism on the island’s coast. It offers a unique variety of locations, from the more rugged coves in the north, like sa Calobra, to the larger coves with finer sand, like Sa Canova, Cala Mesquida and Cala Agulla and the beautiful beach of Es Trenc in the south. A large number of these locations are almost untouched. Admire the spectacular coastal dune vegetation. In the east, you should visit the long beaches of the Alcúdia and Pollença bays and closer to Palma, the capital of Mallorca, you can visit a large number of extraordinarily beautiful coves in the municipality of Llucmajor. To anchor in one of the coves and swim in its warm, crystal clear waters is one of the greatest pleasures of nautical tourism.
