At present, Mallorca has one maritime-terrestrial national park, four natural parks and a natural reserve. Most of these spaces are also Special Protection Areas for Birds and Natural Areas of Special Interest.

The Tramuntana Mountains were declared a protected area in 2006. The Balearic Government has started the procedure to designate the mountain range a Reserve of the Biosphere. It is the only place in the world where you can see the ferreret, a 4cm long amphibian that is endemic to Mallorca.
